ABEC Presents: Advances in Single-Use Microbial Fermentation:

Microbial fermentation presents significant challenges when implementing in single-use systems.  The required mass transfer rates are an order of magnitude higher than mammalian cell culture, and a substantial amount of metabolic and mechanical agitation heat is generated.  This has limited the performance and scale of single-use fermenters.  ABEC has overcome these challenges leveraging extensive experience with stainless steel fermenters to enable state-of-the-art fermenter performance in single-use fermenters up to 1,000L scale.  In this session, attendees will learn about the key single-use fermenter design elements that enable high power mixing, high gas flow rates, and efficient heat removal, and how these elements result in oxygen transfer rates (OTR) of >500 mmol/L/Hr and optical densities of >100.  Growth data from microbial cultures up to 1,000L scale will also be presented.
